On December 2, 2007, Condé Nast Media Group (CNMG), the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) came together at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood to put on the first ever Movies Rock. The two-hour special, which aired December 7, 2007 on CBS celebrated some of music's most iconic moments in film, while raising money for the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s many charitable causes.
Beginning with Beyoncé's stunning rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," through John Williams conducting a full orchestra playing a medley of instant-classic movie scores, to Tony Bennett's inspired "White Christmas" finale, each of the evening's performances gave new life to some of the most classic movie songs of all time.
In addition to Beyoncé, John and Tony, the event featured such artists as Marc Anthony, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, Eve, Fergie, Jennifer Hudson, Sir Elton John, Queen Latifah, John Legend, LL Cool J, Nicole Scherzinger, Carrie Underwood, Usher, and will.i.am. MOVIES ROCK also enlisted the talents of such stars as Jennifer Lopez, Harrison Ford, Josh Duhamel, Jenna Fischer, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Kate Hudson, Shirley MacLaine, Rita Moreno, John C. Reilly, Emmy Rossum, Molly Sims, Quentin Tarantino, Charlize Theron and Billy Bob Thornton, who provided narration and reflections on the impact that music has had on their lives and their work. In addition, Martin Scorsese contributed a brilliant presentation on the significance of sound in motion pictures and the importance of film preservation to the entertainment industry's collective legacy.
EIF would like to thank Condé Nast, the Producers Guild of America, CBS, Don Mischer Productions, all the musicians and actors that lent their time and talent, event sponsors Chevrolet, Citi, Dillard's, Estée Lauder, Sony, TRESemmé, and Verizon Wireless, and everyone else who helped make Movies Rock such an incredible success. Your generosity has helped us not only to celebrate the undeniable power of music and the movies, but raise much-needed funds to allow us to continue our philanthropic endeavors.
