Diabetes is a growing health concern in the United States. An estimated 24 million Americans have diabetes, of which 6.2 million are undiagnosed. Diabetes, if not treated properly, can lead to serious complications including blindness, kidney damage, heart disease and amputations.

The Entertainment Industry Foundation and Novo Nordisk have joined forces to fight the growing burden of diabetes through a national educational campaign, called Diabetes Aware. The campaign informs Americans about the importance of diabetes detection, monitoring and proper management of this progressive disease.

Our goal is to help people with diabetes learn more about its side effects, and take a more active role in the management and treatment of the disease. Further, the campaign encourages Americans to talk to their doctor about getting tested.

Already, this initiative has received wide-spread support from the entertainment community. Award-winning filmmakers Lucy Fisher and Doug Wick, Janet and Jerry Zucker are honorary chairs of the initiative. They have long-track record for working determinedly to improve the lives of children and adults living with diabetes.

Halle Berry has joined as the first celebrity ambassador for the campaign, identifying herself as one of the 24 million Americans living with the disease. Recently, EIF produced a broadcast public service announcement directed by acclaimed director Jerry Zucker. The 30-second PSA stars actors Kevin Kline and Jon Lovitz and features a music score by Academy-award winning composer John Powell. Many other industry members donated their talent and services for the production, including Paramount Pictures and Union Editorial. [Link to Broadcast PSA press release]

EIF Ambassadors William Atherton, James Avery, Dustin Hoffman, Maria Menounos, Edward James Olmos, and Judge Reinhold, all who have been personally touched by diabetes in some way, support our continued educational outreach.
