EIF MOURNS THE DEATH OF OUR FRIEND DR. BERNARD WEINSTEIN
November 10, 2008 - Dr. I. Bernard Weinstein, Frode Jensen Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, as well as director emeritus of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, died November 3 in New York City. Dr. Weinstein, a noted authority on cancer epidemiology and prevention and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (EIF's NCCRA), was 78 years old. We mourn his loss, and extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Joan; their children Claudia, Tamara and Matthew; and all of his extended family, colleagues and friends.
As a pioneer in the field of molecular epidemiology, Dr. Weinstein made significant strides toward understanding genetic, environmental and dietary factors in the development of cancer. With seed funding from EIF's NCCRA, Dr. Weinstein made exciting progress in identifying anticancer agents found in natural plant products. These findings, which identify chemicals in green tea and garlic that inhibit the growth of cancer cells, suggest new approaches to the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.
